Metro Council Votes To Pay Additional $30,000 To Settle Assault Case Against The Police

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Metro Council voted Tuesday night to pay an additional $30,000 to settle a personal injury lawsuit filed against the city.

Yolanda Mitchell was arrested in November of 2009 for intoxication and filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that during her arrest she was assaulted by a Metro Police Officer.

Metro has since paid over $27,000 in medical expenses to Mitchell and Tuesday’s unanimous vote added another $30,000 to the bill.

Tuesday’s vote came after the Metro Department of Law recommended that council should settle the case because a court could rule that the police department acted negligently in hiring or supervising.
