Tasers raise praise and concerns: Jackson, Trenton police buy Tasers; officers undergo training

The Trenton Police Department is among a rising number of departments in West Tennessee that use stun guns. Jackson police officers will be issued Tasers early next year.

Officers say Tasers will efficiently incapacitate suspects, reduce the number of scuffles that occur and limit injuries to officers and suspects. They also hope Tasers will cut down on the times they have to reach for pepper spray or their guns.

Critics say too little is known about the effects of a stun gun on the body to incorporate them into uniform policy, and that one death due to a Taser is too many. A United Nations committee has said the use of stun guns can be a form of torture.
