Former inmate says jail attack left him paralyzed

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A former inmate at the Sevier County jail has filed a federal lawsuit that says an attack at the facility last year left him paralyzed.

The Mountain Press and WBIR-TV report that the inmate, Ronald McDaniel, claims in the federal complaint that he was denied medical treatment for hours after being beaten.

Sheriff Ron Seals told The Mountain Press that he couldn’t comment on pending litigation.

The suit filed last month alleges the jail violated McDaniel’s federal constitutional rights because he was not protected from the attacks by other inmates and because he didn’t receive proper medical treatment after being injured.

WBIR-TV reports McDaniel was jailed on a DUI charge, and now is a quadriplegic living at a facility in Kingsport. He is seeking $25 million plus punitive damages.
