Ex-Sevier County Court Clerk Joe Keener pleads guilty to theft and misconduct charges
SEVIERVILLE — A former Sevier County Court Clerk accused of stealing more than $94,000 from his office pleaded guilty today to theft and misconduct charges.
Joe Thomas Keener, who resigned in August 2010 after manning the elected post for more than 18 years, was sentenced to a suspended 10-year prison sentence which he must serve on supervised probation, according to Fourth Judicial Circuit District Attorney General James B. Dunn.
Under an agreement approved by the Honorable Jon Kerry Blackwood, Keener pleaded guilty to
charges of official misconduct and theft of more than $60,000. Authorities contend Keener allegedly stole $94,645.50 in cash from the clerk’s office between July 1 and Aug. 16, 2010.
