Meeting to address juvenile court in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Federal officials who have been critical of the treatment of black youths in Shelby County Juvenile Court are planning to host a public meeting in Memphis this month to address the problems.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division conducted a 3-year probe of the treatment of black youths in Memphis and found they were more likely to be detained, less likely to receive leniency and more likely to be transferred to adult court than their white counterparts.
