Former Hawkins jailer, ‘Toy Run Santa’ bound over on drug charge
ROGERSVILLE — The Surgoinsville man known for leading an annual Christian-based charity motorcycle “Toy Run” every year wearing a Santa suit was bound over to the Hawkins County grand jury Wednesday on a single pill trafficking charge.
David Wayne “Big Time” Richards, 51, 422 Church St., Surgoinsville, was employed as a Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office jailer on April 10 when he was arrested in a drug sting that was set up — according to police testimony — by a former jail inmate.
HCSO Narcotics Unit Sgt. David Benton was the only witness to testify during Richards’ preliminary hearing held Wednesday in Hawkins County Sessions Court.
