Former prison guard gets 5 years probation
A Nashville judge recently sentenced the former correctional officer accused of aiding a death row inmate’s escape attempt to five years in prison. The sentence, however, was suspended to supervised probation.
Justin W. Heflin, a Charlotte resident, and Donald J. Kohut, 34, of Flemington, N.J., were arrested in March for plotting to free convicted murderer Christa Gail Pike from death row.
Heflin was fired earlier that month from the Tennessee Prison for Women in Nashville. State officials said Kohut frequently visited Pike in prison and bribed Heflin with gifts. A February grand jury indictment stated Kohut and Heflin arranged to trace a prison key in January and have it copied to be used in the escape attempt.
