Hamilton Co. corrections sergeant accused of stealing inmate’s food card

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) — A Hamilton County corrections sergeant is accused of stealing an inmate’s food card, following an Internal Affairs investigation.

Sheriff Jim Hammond tells Channel 3, Sgt. Wanda Smith voluntarily resigned Tuesday, after she was given the results of the investigation.

Monday, former inmate, Gregory Sciance, told Channel 3 that his food stamp card was gone from his wallet, when he was released on November 5.

Sciance claims he was able to document eight cases of unauthorized usage when he checked his EBT account on line with Tennessee’s Department of Human Services.
All but one occurred at either the Dollar General Store in Dunlap, or the Wal Mart nearby. He says the final debit, for $93.62, occurred at the Dollar Tree store in Soddy Daisy October 27.
Sheriff Hammond says video evidence points to Smith, but couldn’t release details of the footage due to the ongoing investigation.
